Kevin Keegan, Emlyn Hughes and Margaret Thatcher

Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes cosying up to Thatcher on the Downing Street steps

A story in the Grauniad mentions a famous photo of Kevin Keegan and Emlyn Hughes cosying up to Thatcher on the Downing Street steps. It would seem important that such an important image be preserved for future generations.

While talking about football I must mention that I am reading the excellent book The Damned Utd by David Peace. Recommended for all those who hated the Leeds team of the 70s.

  1. What was the deal with Leeds in the 1970s? Like, didn't everyone hate them? I can remember singing anti-Leeds chants, and I hated football.

  2. They were powerful, successful and dirty. Shortly after his appointment Clough famously told the Leeds players that they should throw all their medals in the bin, since they'd won them unfairly. Hatred of Leeds was the only thing my Liverppol/Man Utd supporting middle school could agree on.
